Safeguard Mechanism Submission

The Make Big Polluters Pay campaign has made a submission to the Australian Government’s review of the Safeguard Mechanism, setting out our case for ensuring Australia’s biggest climate polluters are held accountable for the pollution they produce. Our submission argues that Australia’s climate policies must deliver genuine emissions reductions and reflect a simple principle: those contributing most to the climate crisis should bear greater responsibility for addressing it.

Climate Finance PIF Letter

Ahead of the 2026 Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau, the Make Big Polluters Pay Alliance and 25 climate, development, and humanitarian organisations from across Australia and the Pacific issued an open letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Climate & Energy Minister Chris Bowen, urging them to show strong leadership on climate finance on the international stage.
The letter urges Australia, as the leader of the President of Negotiations of COP31, to deliver the climate leadership that Pacific nations, and global circumstances, demand. It calls on the Australian governments to:
  • Make a new climate pledge in line with Australia's fair share.
  • Prioritise financing the Pacific Resilience Facility, Adaptation Fund, and the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage
  • Establish a Climate Pollution Levy on coal, oil, and gas corporations in Australia to fill a Climate Compensation Fund.
  • Proactively advocate for a Polluters Pay approach on the international stage, including at COP31 and the ongoing UN Tax Convention negotiations.

Making coal, oil and gas Corporations in Australia Pay Their Fair Share for the Costs of Climate Change

Big coal, oil and gas corporations are most responsible for the pollution causing climate change, yet right now it is communities that pay the price. Climate disasters are hitting communities hard in Australia and the Pacific and the costs of insurance, food and other bills are rising due to climate change impacts.

Meanwhile, big energy corporations prioritise their profits and lock in more climate change because the true cost of their products — the cost of responding to their climate pollution — is being borne by the community and government budgets.

The Australian Government must take action to fix the system and put in place a Climate Pollution Levy on coal, oil and gas corporations to fill a Climate Compensation Fund. This report explains why this is necessary and how it could work.
